Making a PDF

Step 1: Loading the Sentinel PPD

PC Users:

1. Download the appropriate Printer Driver to your system—this will allow you to add the Sentinel PPD (postscript print driver) to your choice of printers. You can download the driver on the Adobe site at http://www.adobe.com/products/printerdrivers/windows.html.

2. Have the Sentinel PPD called CMYKDIST file available, either on a floppy disk or on your hard drive before you install AdobePS or PScript. Call your Sales Rep/CSR to have a copy of the Sentinel PPD sent to you.

3. Quit all open applications.

4. Double-click the AdobePS or PScript Setup or Setup.exe file to begin the installation.

5. Installation process:

  • Choose local printer, LPT1 port.
  • For QuarkXpress users only. Choose local printer, FILE port.
  • Rather than using the Generic PostScript printer, browse for the Sentinel ppd (CMYKDIST) and choose that.
  • Do not check "use as default," do not print a test page, and click finish.

**When you download the AdobePS or PScript, do not open from the site. You should save to a disk or on your hard drive so you can repeat use with other ppd files.

Mac Users:

1. Copy the Sentinel PPD called CMYKDIST into your Printer Descriptions folder, in your Extensions folder in your System folder. Call your Sales Rep/CSR to have a copy of the Sentinel PPD sent to you.

For Mac and PC Users:

When creating a PostScript or PDF file for Sentinel, simply choose the Sentinel PPD as the printer for that file.

Step 2: Saving Your File As a PDF using Acrobat Distiller

1. Load Sentinel PPD.

2. Make PostScript files from your native application (Adobe PageMaker, QuarkXpress or Microsoft Word) using the CMYKDIST.PPD.

3. You need to have Adobe Acrobat 3.01 or higher, not Acrobat Reader.

4. Sentinel will provide three files that need to placed within Adobe Acrobat. Place epilogue.ps, prologue.ps loose in the Distiller folder, in the Adobe Acrobat folder. Place the jahnvr5.ps loose in your Adobe Acrobat folder. (Adobe Acrobat 5.0 users will only need the jahnvr5.ps.)

5. Check that your settings in Adobe Acrobat Distiller Job Options match the settings provided by Sentinel. Contact Sentinel for a copy of the correct settings.

6. Create a Watched folder for Distiller, if you do not already have one to place your PostScript files into.

To create a Watched Folder in Distiller
  1. Make a new folder on your desktop, name it Distiller Hot Folder.
  2. Go under Settings in Distiller, select Watched Folders.
  3. Click Add.
  4. Select the Distiller Hot Folder you created.
  5. Now you have an In and Out folder inside your Distiller Hot Folder.

7. Place jahnvr5.ps in the "IN" folder of the Watched folder to distill, this makes jahnvr5.ps active.

8. Place your PostScript files you created with our PPD into the "IN" folder to distill into PDF files.

9. Review your PDF in Acrobat before sending to Sentinel. Check for copy flow, bleeds, etc.
